Breaking News: CONGRATULATIONS! Today, 8/16 should be the halfway point in terms of miles. The location should be near Enterprise. Staying around Clay City tonight, 8/15 - no confirmation update from the road however so I'll hopefully hear from them tomorrow. It hit 100 degrees in Clay City today so another hot one out there. Had an interview on 8/14 with the Effingham Daily News.

After following John III's adventure through www.seejohnrun.com Karen and John have been inspired to start a journey of there own. John III wanted to encourage everyone that they can do the dream that has been in the back of their minds and even dream beyond that. Karen and John want people to know you don't have to be young or fast, you just have to have the desire. Setting up a run from Lake Superior in Marquette Michigan and Running to the Gulf of Mexico in Biloxi Mississippi is just a start. This 1400 mile plus journey is a shortened version of other Runs Across America, and has not been undertaken before from what we can tell. As we know from the many changes that John III incurred our dates may change, our routes may change, our mileage may change but our desire and determination will never change. Help along the way will be needed and we invite emails and suggestions while we formulate all of this.
I did not have PE in High School, I did not run Cross Country or Track & Field. In the service was my first experience with running. The first run after breakfast was a horrible site, was I sick. No more running until police academy many years later. I still hated it but enjoyed the benefits of it. On graduation....no more running again. Then in 1984 a newspaper clip for Big Brother - Big Sisters 2 Mile run caught my eye. At 34 I began running. A couple of blocks until I built up to one mile, what an accomplishment. At 2 miles I knew I was ready to "compete". I went to the race alone not knowing what to expect. The people were happy to have over 300 runners at the event and I was happy to be at my first road race. Huffing and Puffing thru the streets of Negaunee Michigan I thought I would never get to the finish line, but I did in 14:??. Not a bad time for me. I stayed for the drawing of prizes after the award ceremony to see if I could win something. Well, to my surprise I got third place during the award ceremony a Bronze Medallion Key Chain. Third place.......my running has began. Many many more stories have come over the years including the present 17 year running streak, My first Marathon in Milwaukee in 1990...the last one Seattle 2005......We have just ran The Lake Antoine Classic 15k, and Cedar River 1/2 Marathon. Member of The Upper Peninsula Road Runners Club and The United States Running Streak Association.
KAREN
I didn't think about becoming a runner until a few years ago. I have had the experience of watching my husband and family run for almost 20 years. I was the supporter and cheerleader, the one at the finish line with a smile. I was asked and ecouraged to participate and rarely did. In 2001 I became part of that running group. I too had a running streak, it was two years without missing a day, but it ended when some unrelated surgery took place. My new running streak began 9-26-2005. I put on my shoes and get out there even when I don't want to. I am not the typical runner. I am over 50, overweight and go over the 10 minute mile time. It takes me at least a mile to warm up, after three miles I get into a stride that is enjoyable. I have aches and pains and issues, but I'm out there running. I have run 4 marathons and am still looking for a 5 hour time. I have run in many 5k, 10k and other mileage road races and have acquired a lot of awards. I too am a member of running clubs, a member of a group of people who think nothing of getting up in the middle of the night to gather at dawn to run. I have great health exams, am in awe of the amount of medications others take, while I may only take a pain reliever once in awhile. As I write this today is March 5, 2007 we have 123 days and 8 hours before this dream will become a true-life adventure for John and myself, a dream to run on a journey down the road of our country, an accomplishment very few have achieved.

A run of this magnitude requires help by people along the way to provide us a place to set up our tent, or perhaps move us out of the yard and into a spare bedroom for the night. A shower area and meal are always appreciated but never required. Good conversation and area stories is always desired. We will set up housing based on where we are for the night from the posted schedule of were we will be on what dates. We plan on 13 or more miles per day and base the housing on 13, so if we go over it will move our next stop off all the way down. Also if we decide to stay in one place for more than one day that will also change the housing needs. This is not a set in stone amount of days run, we are flexible and may enjoy the culture of one area many more days than another.
